Known as a disease that effects the farmers income the most, Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease. The Zoonotic infection affects both cow’s fertility rate and in lactating cattle effects the rate and quality of the cow’s milk. The cattle are affected by urinary infections which often causes infertility and abortions within the host carrier. The cattle’s milk is also affected by the infections caused by the disease which in turn effects the milk by turning it thick and yellow in colour.
The host-adapted Lepto serovar disease is the only one found in cows and can affect the animal from any age, which is another factor making this disease incredibly destructive. If found in young calves the disease can cause other illnesses during the course of its life including kidney failure and urinary infections.
The Zoonotic make up of this disease is one of the many reasons why it is vital that it is detected early. A Zoonotic disease is an infectious one that is caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites that can spread between animals and humans.
